ReWildMyBio https://rewildmybio.com Podcast Sun, 12 Jun 2022 14:42:41 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.4.3 Ep. 47 How to Predict the Weather w/ Shawn https://rewildmybio.com/how-to-predict-the-weather/ https://rewildmybio.com/how-to-predict-the-weather/#comments Fri, 10 Jun 2022 18:41:57 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=957 Today we discuss how to predict the weather so that you can stay out longer and be prepared for everything Gaia throws in your next wilderness adventure. We all know that meteorologists are notoriously wrong with their predictions. It just so happens the process of becoming your own weather person is a great way to learn and connect with your local landscape. In this episode, we discuss what barometric pressure is and how to read cloud cover and changing winds. I also share how a sit spot can assist in the process of remembering how to use intuition to predict changes in weather. I introduce the concept of the primal self and how to trust this part of ourselves to not only predict the weather but control our body’s temperature. I finish by debunking some old wives’ tales and sharing some that I think are worth remembering.

Ep. 46 Cotton Kills: The Benefits of Merino Wool w/ Shawn https://rewildmybio.com/merino-wool/ https://rewildmybio.com/merino-wool/#respond Thu, 05 May 2022 20:00:14 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=933 Today we discuss all things merino wool. What is it? And why you shouldn’t head into the back country or next afternoon hike without it. And perhaps most importantly why you should leave the cotton and synthetics for the gym, garden, or a night on the town when you are not planning to immerse yourself in the elements for long periods of time. I also share my experience wearing merino wool during my 96 hour vision quest in freezing temperatures and how I layered this amazing fabric to stay dry and warm. When it comes to connecting with nature through nature immersion, whether you are a bird watcher, a hunter, or new to experiencing the outdoors, having the right clothing can make a big difference in your ability to stay out and be one with the elements.

Ep. 45 My Ottawa Experience Through an Ecopsychology Lens W/ Shawn https://rewildmybio.com/my-ottawa-experience/ https://rewildmybio.com/my-ottawa-experience/#respond Wed, 16 Feb 2022 17:01:57 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=924 Hello and thanks for joining. It’s been a while since I have posted an episode. The reason for this episode is to share my observations from attending a scientific debate and soaking in the vibe of the peaceful protests in Ottawa Canada this past weekend. I am breaking a personal vow of silence to post this episode as I feel now is time for all Canadians to break their silence if they also oppose the mandates, vaccine passports, and divisive politics. I also discuss the need for ecopsychology as a theoretical framework to address the individual and cultural healing Canadians and Canada are in need of. I step into the role of cultural ethnographer and provide context for the Instagram lives I posted as well as share my observatory notes from the weekend. I cover the size of the protest, my interactions with locals, what I did, how the protestors were blocked in, and what the police presence was like. I share stories from the scientific debate turned scientific conference as Dr. Theresa Tam did not show up. Dr. Paul Alexander (Ph.D. – Clinical Epidemiology), Dr. Roger Hodkinson (MD), and Dr. Byram Bridle (Ph.D. – Viral Immunologist) took to the microphone while alternative press captured the two-hour presentation with questions and answer period afterward. The episode finishes with a shift to the question as to what is next as democracy and body sovereignty in Canada hang in the balance. Please share this episode far and wide.

Ep. 44 Show Me Your Papers and Civil Disobedience w/ Shawn https://rewildmybio.com/show-me-your-papers/ https://rewildmybio.com/show-me-your-papers/#respond Thu, 09 Sep 2021 17:05:26 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=919 It’s been a while since I have recorded a podcast. To be honest I have been scared to break my silence for fear of repercussions… that said, I told myself in March 2020 that when the vaccine passport comes (as I knew it would) I would have to break my silence. This episode is me doing just that, but before I get into the weeds of the day, I discuss how I have been enjoying being immersed in building my house on the 30 acres of land I am stewarding in the Canadian shield. I have also been enjoying laying the foundation for one of Canada’s best nature connection schools through my Ph.D. research. I give a brief update of these projects before diving into the vaccine passport and all things government silliness here in Canada. Speaking of government silliness how about the 2021 Canadian election? Nothing could be more alarming than the Canadian Prime Ministers’ campaign speech and JT’s striking resemblance to Hitler’s speeches of the 1930s. Unfortunately, no amount of logic or rational thinking will help the masses step back from the ledge… that said I do my best and if nothing more get some much needed things off my chest. The future is in our hands… what will we do with it?

Ep. 42 Natural Burials: Rewilding in the Afterlife w/ Susan Greer and (co-host) Dr. Richard Vuksinic ND https://rewildmybio.com/natural-burial/ https://rewildmybio.com/natural-burial/#respond Thu, 20 May 2021 12:25:07 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=897 Our wild and wonderful guest is Susan Greer. Susan is the executive director of the Natural Burial Association of Ontario. She’s is passionate about launching natural burial grounds all over Ontario. the Natural Burial Association builds awareness of natural burial options, supports local advocacy groups, and gently lets people know that cremation isn’t as eco-friendly as they might think. So if you’re mortal, this episode might interest you. In this episode, we discuss the environmental destruction caused by conventional practices, how a natural burial is for anyone and honours any faith-based traditions, how nature contact with these designated natural burial sites can assist in the grieving process, cost-saving compared to conventional options, and how a natural burial will help you regenerate soil long after your soul passes on to the next part of your journey.  We also discuss some red tape that the Ontario government recently put into law surrounding burial grounds and what you can do to help this amazingly successful and emerging grassroots movement in your neck of the woods. Ep. 40 w/ Jeff Chilton & Co-host Dr. Richard Vuksinic ND – Shroom Boom: Complete Guide to Medicinal Mushroom Cultivation https://rewildmybio.com/the-mushroom-guy/ https://rewildmybio.com/the-mushroom-guy/#respond Mon, 22 Mar 2021 20:00:33 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=872 My guest today is the wild and wonderful Jeff Chilton. Jeff is president of Nammex a company founded in 1989 and supplies medicinal mushroom extracts to the health and wellness industry. His son Ski Chilton started Real Mushrooms which sells 100% mushroom extracts direct to consumers. In this episode, we learn from an ethnomycology pioneer who has a deep passion for the wild places mushrooms grow as well as cultivating high-quality mushroom products with integrity in the face of the shroom boom. We also go over the challenges in operating small-scale commercial mushroom cultivation businesses and how growing our own mushrooms, foraging for mushrooms, and wildcrafting our own medicine is a healthy addition to consuming mushrooms from purely commercial cultivation. Check out full show notes for links to resources that will help you test the mushroom products you currently use. Like all things in nature, a paradox exists and this episode balances the ethical concerns around the market demand for nutritional testing standards and best practices within production, with the importance of deepening our relationship with mushrooms through nature connection and putting down the distractions of modern technology and social media.

Ep. 39 Hunting Is Sacred: Intention, Death, and Healing w/ Mansal Denton & (co-host) Dr. Richard Vuksinic ND https://rewildmybio.com/hunting-is-sacred/ https://rewildmybio.com/hunting-is-sacred/#respond Tue, 02 Mar 2021 19:15:16 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=863 Mansal Denton, aka “Little Beaver” is the founder of Sacred Hunting, host of the Mansal Denton Podcast, and the subject of an upcoming documentary “Below The Drop” exploring our relationship to life and death through hunting. Shawn and Richard converse with Mansal on hunting as a rite of passage and a means of connecting with nature and spirit. Mansal shares his biography and how in one early chapter of his life he felt insecure and chased a woman to Europe, which led him to prison. Struggling with shame and confusion of what it meant to be a man, he found his calling within the sacred art of hunting. He now desires to share this practice with more men and does so through the group hunt he facilitates over at www.sacredhunting.com. Please reach out and connect with Mansal if you are interested in being a participant in one of his upcoming hunts. There is a link to an upcoming shed hunt in Montanna Mansal is hosting and linked in the show notes. We define what sacred hunting is, the importance of setting intentions, how sacred hunting differs from the majority of hunting that takes a sportsman or conservation approach. We discuss modern societies’ relationship with life and death, rites of passage, what a healthy and united masculine and feminine energy looks like, and making hunting a spiritual practice and way to connect us with our ancestors while communing with local ecologies in a symbiotic and mutually beneficial way.

TOPICS DISCUSSED:
What is sacred hunting? Hunting with intention; Indigenous/ Naturalistic life way for healing; Facing adversity and thriving; Being of service to community; plant medicine ceremonies and hunting; rites of passage; ritual and hunting; Connecting with local ecologies and food; Men’s work.

Ep. 38 How to Process Roadkill w/ Shawn https://rewildmybio.com/roadkill/ https://rewildmybio.com/roadkill/#respond Fri, 12 Feb 2021 20:33:50 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=830 This past week I went from meat poor, to very rich. In this episode of Rewild My Bio I tell my story of how I recently secured venison for my freezer via roadkill. I go over a check list of safety precautions you can take when processing roadkill for consumption. Stop by the show notes at rewildmybio.com/roadkill for a transcript of things to consider so that you can put food on your table and make the best out of an unfortunate situation. If you found this episode helpful please rate and review the podcast on the platform of your choice. This helps me make the podcast better and helps others find the show. Stay Wild!

Topics Discussed:

Suspending judgment and staying open to the idea of consuming roadkill; Roadkill carpaccio; Gross vs. good food; Know the law; safe collection and stopping to breathe and connect; Use your senses to assess for freshness to ensure safe consumption; Assess for external and internal damage; Look out for tainted meat, bugs, and maggots; Have your bug out bag with supplies; Choose the gutless method if you suspect major internal organ trauma; Blessing and thanking your animal; Processing and butchering; Cooking.

Tips for procuring meat from a roadkill whitetail deer

  1. Safe collection: Take a breath and be aware of the surroundings and be mindful of traffic.
  2. Know the law: Some states and provinces require tags and in others, it is illegal to collect roadkill or possess any dead wild animal. Look into your local regulations.
  3. Freshness: Only take roadkill that you can deem is fresh enough for safe consumption. The climate you find the animal in will determine what senses will be important to pay attention to. Use all your senses (including your intuition or sixth sense). You definitely want to use your eyes and nose. Check to see if the animal’s eyes are clear, if milky or cloudy the animal has been dead for a while. Check the elasticity of the skin, it should be able to pull away from the muscle and the animal should not be in full rigor mortis though some stiffness should be expected after a few hours or if the animal has been sitting out all night. Do not take meat that is covered in bugs or maggots.
  4. Assess for external and internal damage: Be aware of whether there was internal damage and if the stomach acid and contents leaked as this could spoil and/or taint the meat. Look for road rash and cut away any meat that has coagulated blood or bone fragments. Be careful not to cut yourself on the sharp bone.
  5. Be prepared: Have your bug out bag ready by having a bag full of knives, rubber gloves, game bags, and even having a cooler in your vehicle to collect small game or store meat that has been cut off of animals that couldn’t be 100% salvaged. If you are on foot, a backpack with knives and game bags is ideal and if you find a larger animal like a deer hopefully you can phone a friend for help.
  6. Processing and Butchering: If you do not know the time of death it is best to try to process the meat as soon as possible so to get it cooled. It is best that you remove the animal from the side of the road for processing and do it in a safe way that is respectful to non-hunters. Choose the gutless method if you suspect a lot of internal damage otherwise continue to gut as normal for whitetail deer. Impact damage will determine how you go about butchering the animal for your freezer. The MeatEater Fish and Game Cookbook is a great resource for butchering big and small game.
  7. Thanking and blessing the animal: With procuring any wild foods it is important to pay respect and honour the plant, animal, and place you are harvesting from. If you are a hunter and have a usual gratitude practice for when you kill an animal, it seems appropriate to honour your roadkill in the same fashion. An attitude of gratitude helps us stay open to receiving the many gifts of Mother Earth and is a noble step in helping the animal transition to the spirit realm and onto your dinner plate.
  8. Cooking the animal: If you were unsure of how long the animal was dead for, or if you have any indication that the meat was on the verge of spoilage be sure to cook your roadkill thoroughly. When in doubt throw it out. Things can change from the time of processing to the table. Maybe your excitement for finding a deer overshadowed your better judgement. If you feel that the meat is not safe to consume or not fresh properly dispose of it.

Ep. 36 Updates From the LAND, Finding Truth, Nature Connection and Your Health w/ Shawn https://rewildmybio.com/ep-36-w-shawn-updates-from-land-finding-truth-nature-connection-and-your-health/ https://rewildmybio.com/ep-36-w-shawn-updates-from-land-finding-truth-nature-connection-and-your-health/#respond Wed, 03 Feb 2021 21:00:59 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=807 What’s up you wild and wonderful people! Today’s episode is fully inspired by listener Q&A and feedback that I have received as of late. I enjoyed putting this one together and it is my hope that by doing more solo casts I can share what is exciting in my world of nature connection and rewilding. In today’s episode I do just that, focus on the good things in my life, and as Henry David Thoreau “all good things are wild and free”. Some of the good and exciting stuff happening in my life is up North on the LAND I am stewarding in the Canadian Shield. This year I am looking at building a cabin, outdoor bath, and sauna, as well as cutting trails, creating a bushcraft camp in the woods, and regenerating hardwoods that were forested by the previous owner of the property. Lots of opportunities to mind my own business and work with my hands! I discuss some of the rewilding practices I am focused on for the coming months and how I am getting my daily dose of nearby nature for positive mental health. I then get into the importance of preparation given the uncertain times we still find ourselves in. I discuss how my breathwork practice and saving seeds are two important areas to consider when preparing for what nature may throw at you. I answer listener and online questions (more so accusations or assumptions) about me seeming to have set up shop in the “anti-masker” camp, which sparks a whole conversation on finding and defining truth. I end this topic with some positive notes about deleting Twitter, keeping it sunny online, supporting local and small businesses, and how to best avoid polarization and walk in truth. I finish off this episode by going over a recommendation from some research I have been studying on how to get the most out of nature connection through regulating our emotions and being mindful in nature.

Ep. 35 The Year of the Mirror: Owning a “Nonessential” Small Business in 2020, Cultural Identity and the Illusion of Separation w/ Colin Jackson https://rewildmybio.com/illusion-of-separation/ https://rewildmybio.com/illusion-of-separation/#respond Fri, 08 Jan 2021 21:25:17 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=761 Today my wild and wonderful guest is Colin Jackson. If you are looking for an online health coach to kickstart your 2021 or you want to join Colin’s weekly online breathing classes please contact him directly. In his return to the podcast, Colin (Instagram @colindjacks) shares his 2020 journey and discusses what it was like expanding his fitness facility in early 2020, then being locked down and deemed nonessential, and evolving his business into the online world. If you or someone you know had to say goodbye to something you loved in 2020 this episode is definitely worth a listen. My guest shares how having a solid footing in his connection with God/Creator, tools like psilocybin mushrooms, and access to some remote backcountry wilderness afforded Colin the ability to face his fears, surrender, and accept some hard truths in 2020. In the process, he was able to get more clear on what he is and that he is much bigger than Colin the health coach, husband, and entrepreneur. We also discuss Colin’s spiritual practices and cultural background as both Cree First Nation and as a “White” man of European descent, and how that has lead Colin to gain a deeper and nuanced understanding of the illusion of separation that is highly palpable as we start 2021. His story may be helpful for those that see themselves as victims of top-down policy that impinge on basic rights and freedoms using the reclaiming of indigenous lands as a case for conversation. We finish the episode with Colin’s dream for the Earth which is one focused on harmony. Enjoy the show!

Please download, subscribe, rate, and review this episode to help others find it. Thanks!

Ep. 34 Best of 2020: What is Your Wildest Dream for the Earth? https://rewildmybio.com/wildestdream2020/ https://rewildmybio.com/wildestdream2020/#respond Tue, 22 Dec 2020 17:04:52 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=711 For the last show of 2020 I have compiled some of my guest’s answers to the question I ask at the end of each episode, “What is your wildest dream for the Earth?” A bit of a heavy question to drop on someone at the end of a conversation but this show embraces topics that carry some weight. I am grateful for my guest’s inspiring and hopeful answers. Big ideas lead to big change and after a year of doing this podcast, it is clear that we need some change if we want to live in harmony with ourselves, others, and Mother Earth once again. Some of the core themes explored in this episode are personal development, self-actualization, opportunity, unity, harmony, stewardship, environmentalism, and nature connection. I could not think of a more beautiful way to wrap up the first year of the podcast than to share this episode and my wildest dream for the Earth with you all at the end. Thanks to all who have subscribed or downloaded an episode over the past year and to those of you that continue to share content from rewildmybio.com with friends. Thanks to my many guests for sharing their knowledge and passion and donating their time. Thanks to my co-hosts this year Richard and Tyler who also share their wildest dream for the Earth. Ep. 33 Starving the Beast: And Other Outlawed Health Topics in 2020 https://rewildmybio.com/starvethebeast/ https://rewildmybio.com/starvethebeast/#respond Wed, 16 Dec 2020 16:59:52 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=716 My guest is the wild and wonderful Zach McCready one of the original outlaws of health. You can find Zach at King of Swords on his blog and sign up for his newsletter to keep up with Zach’s upcoming book and all things Humble Warrior Clothing. An amazing company that you can support if you are looking to help those less fortunate this holiday season.  Head over to the show notes at rewildmybio.com/starvethebeast for more info on how to support this worthy initiative in London Ontario Canada. In this episode, We discuss what has changed in the world of outlawed health topics since Zach and I last podcasted together years ago. We also dive into how corporate interests often trump democracy and community level grassroots movements by dissecting the rise of the cannabis industry.  We discuss the role the Chinese Communist Party has played in the current pandemic and how something does not sit right with the whole Bat Soup narrative we are spoon-fed… pun intended! Whether you have been dissecting and digesting pandemic information with a scientific lens or you are listening to and following your gut, all signs point to corruption, greed, and pure evil pulling the strings in government, media, academia, and within institutions like the WHO and the CDC. That is of course if you are privy to the idea that capitalism and democracy are dead and the pandemic has been in a sense planned as a means to usher in tighter government control in the Western world. Sit back roll up a spliff and take a red pill of hard truths as you listen to this timely and important episode. But don’t worry this is far from a doom and gloom podcast, my guest comes equipped with resources galore and practical tips to help you rely less on big brother and at the same time starve the beast and make strong, free, and healthy local communities. Please check out the show notes for tons of resources to fill you in on some of the back stories of this alternative narrative that is being censored out of existence on the internet… but act fast before this podcast gets “fact checked” and erased by Dr. Evil… I mean Bill Gates minions. Enjoy the show!

Ep. 32 The Future of Farming: Ecological Farming and Regenerative Practices w/ Drake Larsen and Co-host Dr. Richard Vuksinic ND https://rewildmybio.com/futureoffarming/ https://rewildmybio.com/futureoffarming/#respond Thu, 10 Dec 2020 17:06:27 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=695 My Wild and Wonderful guest today is Drake Larsen of Three Ridges Ecological Farm. We are also joined with long time friend and contributor to the show Dr. Richard Vuksinic ND. In this episode, we take a laid-back and informal approach to a complex topic; the ever evolving world of Ecological Farming. This was a great episode to kick off a topic I believe has the power to not only feed humanity but heal the Earth and all living beings in the process.

We hope to have Drake back to dive deeper into some of the topics we discuss and plenty of others as Drake has a wealth of knowledge and experience in all things rewilding and living in connection with the Earth.

In short, we cover Drake’s fascinating biography and how nature immersion from a young age and shooting a banded goose lead way to a life of travel and adventure, conservation and regeneration, and most notably re-connection.

Through reconnection, Drake has been afforded the opportunity to meet his wife Sara and create the best ecological farm in Canada, but also cultivate a greater sense of self and purpose in the process.

Drake shares his knowledge on topics from carbon cycling, Silvopasture, the dark side of aspects of the vegan life way, views on carbon taxes, and how to raise animals to live their full biological expectation. Not to mention we discuss in depth how the lamb raised on his farm lived to make them taste so good. We close with Drakes’s wildest dream for the Earth which centers around his “3R’s” – Reconnection, Resilience, and Regeneration.

Please enjoy the show and share it with a friend! Listen, download, and subscribe via the platform of your choice!

Topics Discussed:

Full moon Halloween lamb roast; Biological expectation of sheep and ecological farming; Drake’s story returning to the land; cultivating oneself through working with animals and the local landscape; Drake’s work into soil health advocacy in Iowa; Why ecological farming and regenerating soil is needed to feed the world in the future; Sustainable agriculture Drake’s childhood nature experiencing lead to his research work in conservation and running a hunting outfitting business in Iowa; shooting a banded Goose and working with the Hudson Bay Project; Missing the boat on conservation agriculture and regenerating local ecosystem; How animal husbandry and raising livestock can be part of restoring microbial diversity; Silvopasture as a regenerative practice; Building ecosystems and food productivity in ecological farming; Resilience for productivity and benefit to future generations as a guidepost for an ecological farmer; monoculture, modern-day meat-eating and downfalls of the vegan narrative; Enhancing the carbon cycling via soil and native grass growth via ruminant animal grazing; Microbial diversity from ecological farms cycle carbon better than monoculture farms; Healthy soil aggregates for roots and creating habitat; Capturing water via Elemental Ecosystems; Changing farming and land management practices to move carbon into the ground via slow pools over taxing human made carbon emissions; Soil growth as solution to climate change; Barriers to transitioning or creating an ecological farm, cost, change of productivity mindset and going with the flow; Drake’s wildest dream for the Earth is one of his Three R’s – Reconnection, Resilience, and Regeneration.

RMB Meditation #2: Meditation with the Elements https://rewildmybio.com/meditation-with-the-elements/ https://rewildmybio.com/meditation-with-the-elements/#respond Wed, 11 Nov 2020 22:17:20 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=646 This is a special installment for the Rewild My Bio Podcast because it is not like our regular episodes. This is the second of many meditations prerecorded live in the studio to help you remain balanced, centered, and connected to the Earth throughout your day. Please download and save this episode in your podcast platform of choice to come back to it as you need it. If you want to receive a copy of this meditation in MP3 format then please sign up for the newsletter at rewildmybio.com. There is time for silence throughout and at the end of the meditation.

In this guided meditation you will be introduced to the spirit or frequency and vibration of each of the elements – Air, Fire, Water, Earth, and Ether. The meditation begins with a body scan and release of all tension and then each of the elements is welcomed into our energy field so we can deepen our relationship with the elements that make up life on this planet. This meditation can deepen your connection to the living Earth and is best if it can be practiced outdoors or with a plant if you are indoors. It is very possible that these elements will try to communicate with you during or after this meditation to help you with your day or life questions you have been reflecting on. Do your best to listen for them and their guidance and direction. In this meditation, we will be using specific breathing techniques to help us connect with each of the elements. These breaths and hand mudras will aid you in calling forth the spirit, or frequency and vibration, of Air, Fire, Water, Earth, and Aether, into this practice and your life for greater relaxation, insight, and to increase your connection with nature.

Urbanization and the Extinction of Experience https://rewildmybio.com/urbanization-and-the-extinction-of-experience/ https://rewildmybio.com/urbanization-and-the-extinction-of-experience/#respond Mon, 02 Nov 2020 15:23:14 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=657 Human civilization has become increasingly urbanized over the past 100 years. More than half of the Earth’s human population now lives in cities and urban environments, and by 2050 this will increase to 70% [1] Because of this, many people now have fewer opportunities to interact with nature [2]. This rise in urbanization and separation from nature supports that we are experiencing what Robert Pyle coined an “extinction of experience.” [3]. For this blog, I will define ‘nature’ as habitats that support living organisms, including plants and non-human animals. For example, an urban green space that has a mix of native plants, trees, birds, and/or squirrels that call it home. By this definition, a tree in an inner-city backyard classifies as nature.

“As cities and metastasizing suburbs forsake their natural diversity, and their citizens grow more removed from personal contact with nature, awareness, and appreciation retreat.” Robert Pyle

Never before throughout history has such a large percentage of humanity been so far removed from nature and more so deep wilderness [4]. Deep wilderness can be defined as nature that exists in a non-urban environment and without any human interference on the landscape. Despite urban planner’s desire to create more green space in the cities of tomorrow, modern civilization as a whole is losing the opportunity to immerse themself in not only a city park but true deep wilderness.

Is this what modern living is all about? Have the majority of humans forgot that we ARE nature?

There is growing concern that modern living, particularly in western cultures, undermines our sense of belonging and that this may be contributing to increased rates of mental and emotional ill-health. I had the pleasure of meeting with historian and author Graham Hancock at an event in Toronto, Ontario. I would have to agree with his statement that “it is no surprise we are a species with amnesia when corporate interests (and the latest upgrade of the iPhone) have ravaged the precious remnants of our forgotten past.” Have we forgotten our ecological self, the self that extends to other living plants, animals, and landscapes? Research involving youth’s time spent indoors would support this loss of self-identity and data collected on American youth shows social media and personal computer use has been on the rise, while time spent in nature is on the decline [5]. Furthermore, those who spend more time indoors tend to spend that time being sedentary compared to being physically active outdoors. It is almost as if we are trading time outdoors connecting with nature for sedentary time indoors connected online.

In general, individuals in western society spend far less time in nature than in past decades, and a 2017 study by Kellert et al. [6] surveyed 11,817 American adults and children nationwide and reported on 5 society-wide elements that fuel this physical detachment and psychological disconnection from nature;

  1. Location of home, work, or school
  2. Available time, attention, and money
  3. Less dependence on nature for survival
  4. Distraction of technology (i.e. smart-phones, media, etc.)
  5. Lesser expectations for contact with nature to gain satisfaction

Urbanization along with the activities and technologies we are trading time in nature for may have indeed played their role in enriching our lives. However, for this blog, I will highlight that urbanization, sedentarism, and time spent indoors on screens are associated with increased levels of ill mental health, such as anxiety and depression [7,8]. Urbanization and the extinction of experience are also having an impact on the diversity of microbes in the Earth’s soil as well as in our microbiome, which could also be leading to increasing rates of disease [9]. The leading cause of the non-fatal burden of disease is mental ill-health and there is high co-morbidity for chronic disease and mental ill-health [10,11]. This is especially alarming when considering how government health agencies and regulatory bodies like the WHO are now discouraging the idea of shutting down the economy for the pandemic because of the detrimental impact it is now known to have on mental health [12].

This begs the question, if the pros of urbanization, along with so-called “advancements” in medicine and technology, actually outweigh the cons of urbanization that are associated with negative mental health? The big problem here is, do we want to wait and see what the outcome of increased separation will be? We are potentially losing forever the ability to immerse ourselves and strengthen our connection or relationship with nature – is faster internet and fast food (which is becoming as disconnected from nature as we are) at the press of a button something we should be designing our lives around?

If you are reading this far, I assume you also share my belief that the cons of separation outweigh the pros. But does that mean we should just abandon cities and head for the countryside to live off-grid? No, and it is probably highly unlikely that this is even a possibility given the way the world currently operates. Furthermore, modern humans lack the knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely immerse themselves in deep wilderness or let alone live off-grid.

To be honest I do not have a one size fits all answer. Given the upcoming election, you might be inclined to hear people say, “get out and vote” – however, it would be disingenuine for me to suggest such a strategy in 2020 as a means to stop the extinction of experience and high levels of mental illness modern civilization are faced with. My best attempt at a generalizable answer would be to just start small and try to fit nature immersion and connection into your daily life. For starters, to connect with nature and strengthen our relationship we need to be in contact with nature.  Many barriers exist that keep people from being in direct contact with nature and being able to feel safe and secure in nature or deep wilderness. Like any new skill we are trying to build self-efficacy in, we need to gain mastery over small tasks before moving on to more complex skills and tasks. This could be something like understanding how to layer our clothes and what clothes help keep us dry and warm so we can stay immersed in nature for longer – thus receiving more health benefits. This could also mean learning your local land and what berries, mushrooms, and greens are edible – thus strengthening our connection with nature via food procurement. This could even be something like making a fire from friction with a bow drill or building a bushcraft shelter – thus increasing confidence which can be transferable to the attainment of other life goals.

Individual desire to increase self-efficacy in nature is part of the reason we see a rise in eco-therapy like forest therapy, garden therapy, and animal therapy to name a few. Also increasing self-efficacy is part of the reason I started this blog and podcast. To help by interviewing experts in various fields of nature connection and rewilding with the aim of giving you the tools you need via knowledge, skills, abilities to feel confident and continually go deeper and fully explore your relationship with nature; to explore yourself as nature and become the best version of you. Through connecting with nature, we are in essence connecting with ourselves to become a more whole version of ourselves – truer to our ecological self. We are taking care of ourselves when we commit to being in nature – just as we are taking care of ourselves when we exercise, drink clean spring water, brush our teeth, and get plenty of sleep. In my experience, nature contact and nature connection can have one of the most profound impacts on one’s ability to heal at a deep cellular level. Our connection with nature and the living Earth is as upstream as we can get when it comes to healing the root of ill health in human civilization. This is in part because strengthening our connection with nature does not only benefit human health but also the health of the Earth as those who are more connected to nature also shows the tendency toward more pro-environmental behaviors [13].

There is immense potential to influence human health if we can not only physically immerse ourselves in nature but also psychologically reconnect ourselves with nature and no longer see ourselves as separate from the rocks, trees, birds, and bees. In the next installment of this blog, I will lay out some of the theories behind the health benefits of contact with nature as well as some techniques to help us connect with nature so we can get the most out of our time spent in nature and the deep wilderness. Stay tuned for upcoming nature-based meditations that will be released via the podcast platform. These meditations are created to help you stay centered and strengthen your connection with Earth.

RMB Meditation #1: Become the Mountain https://rewildmybio.com/mountain-meditation/ https://rewildmybio.com/mountain-meditation/#respond Wed, 07 Oct 2020 19:42:28 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=628 This is a special installment for the Rewild My Bio Podcast because it is not like our regular episodes. This is the first of many meditations prerecorded live in the studio to help you remain balanced and centered throughout your day. Please download and save this episode in your podcast platform of choice to come back to it as you need it. If you want to receive a copy of this meditation in MP3 format then please sign up for the newsletter at rewildmybio.com

This guided meditation is a 25 minute seated practice to help you ground yourself in the Earth element by embodying the mountain archetype. Mountain meditations can help us ground ourselves and access inner strength and stability when we are faced with stressful and difficult circumstances. By becoming the mountain we are more able to witness the events in our life with non-judgmental awareness rather than being reactive to our experiences, thoughts, and emotions. Unmoving peace, centeredness, stoicism, and eternal beauty are some core qualities this meditation explores. Through creating and visualizing a mountain and merging with that mountain this meditation allows us to witness the storms in our life as the mountain witnesses the changing of the seasons and weather; with unmoving peace, strength, and knowing that all things in nature change.

All meditations begin with mindful attention to the breath, body scan and release of tension, and an acknowledgment of the elements of air, fire, water, earth, and ether. There is time for silence throughout and at the end of the meditation.

A New Leadership: Harvesting What Has Been Sowed https://rewildmybio.com/harvesting-what-has-been-sowed/ https://rewildmybio.com/harvesting-what-has-been-sowed/#respond Wed, 30 Sep 2020 18:07:42 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=608 Is it just me or does anyone else feel like 2020 has been made of moments that seem like a chaotic never ending marathon of polarization, fear, and grief; and at the same interspersed with exceptional experiences of mindful presence, fully aware of the true potential of life? The polarization of my personal experience has me desiring more of this calm, more stillness. Thank goodness Mother Earth provides by ushering in an early Autumn in Southern Ontario and a harvest moon which is taking place October 1 5:05PM EST. Harvest season begins a process of introspection for me and I am craving it. Given the events of this past year, these calm moments have opened up doors of possibility for me that I never thought I would harvest at this point in my life. In the words of author Charles Eisenstein, I feel that this autumn I am beginning to harvest the more beautiful world my heart knows is possible. I feel that this is possible for me now because I never gave up. Like all of us, I was met with many challenges this past year, but I never stopped planting and tending to my sacred garden and 2020 has turned out to be one of my most fruitful harvest moons in recent years.

In those peak moments of calm stillness I have experienced this past year, I feel as if there is no polarization, no fear, no randomized chaos… just balance and oneness, a divine connection between myself, nature, and all living beings on this planet. In these moments everything just is as it is meant to be and it feels right. Feeling the “is’ness” in this way empowers me to continue on my path and harvest the seeds of hope I have planted throughout my life. Especially as it becomes apparent that many people have had their life violently uprooted in the past year, I am continually humbled and in a state of gratitude for my blessings. I can relate to those who have experienced aspects of their world shattered over the last year as I to have been there too. I think my saving grace was that even in the depths of my despair, a tiny spark of hope remained planted deep in my soul. If you are reading this and follow the Rewild My Bio Podcast you have probably also planted seeds of hope for this very time and so maybe you can relate. If you feel something lies deep in your soul that needs tending to for the first time ever then I encourage you to read on.

I reckon it is time for me and those of you who have a similar feeling to harvest what we have planted, to lead the way to a more eco-centric (and less ego-centric) existence for humanity. One where community connection, joy, purpose, peace, and LOVE is at the foundation of Self and society rather than the ego-centric status quo, and the oppression, illness and disease that is systemic in Western culture. (For more on all caps definition of LOVE see Ep. #7 What is LOVE?) It is time to harvest our wildest dreams and turn the etheric into the physical. Take the chance and do the thing that you were meant to do on Earth that brings balance and harmony to your life and adds that frequency to the collective consciousness. Others need you to shine your light. If you have hope that a more beautiful world is possible, then now is the time to take action to physically manifest what has been until now lying dormant in the seed bed of our hearts and souls. We need bold people who are able to not only dream about a more beautiful world – we need to lead it into being with our daily words and actions – embody the spiritual to save the physical world from leadership that has fallen from grace.

We need a new brand of leadership, not more of the same. To say we lack leadership in the Autumn of 2020 is an understatement. (I am speaking towards mainly political leadership, but I could argue poor leadership is an epidemic in every facet of modern life). Leaders can’t be leaders if they are fearful of their followers. Our leaders of today are writing the last chapter of their book by spending more time trying to keep their power then they do having open and honest conversations with the people they are supposed to be leading. These leaders are missing out on the opportunity to learn from the people and enhance their ability to make informed decisions and ultimately be an effective leader. I believe poor leadership and having an abundance of false prophets stems from being disconnected from the true nature of the people who give them power and worship them. Thanks in part to the impact of Western imperialist foreign policy and free market competition with China since the end of the Cold War, many world leaders see their constituents and all of humanity as soulless and separate from nature and the living Earth. Or so this nature based philosopher believes. And so I also believe that to reconnect to the circle of life and cycles of nature we need to reconnect with aspects of our wild soul and do what we were put here to do in the name of LOVE for self, tribe, humanity, mother the Earth and all living beings.

Our current leaders are not Leaders because they do not follow the people. Furthermore a leader cannot be a Leader if they tell half truths so to win popularity amongst a sub set of the population. I don’t think I need to tell you this but this is exactly what is going on with the use of social media advertisements during elections of recent past and present. How can we know what is true anymore if we continue to look outside of ourself for the answers – answers that are so easily manipulated by AI. This social media tactic and others are misleading and dark magic in my opinion. However, it is exactly the game plan of any political leader running for office today. If this polarization we are experiencing today continues on in both spirit and physical forms, over the next couple years we will experience a challenging (and perhaps painful) deconstruction of the myth of separation. With this will come the collapse of the physical counterparts of such myths, like the institutions that house and give power to the leadership of today. A good leader (or at least a leader that would be better than the governments in power today have to offer) is a student of the people and has the ability to track and observe the nature of things to ensure the direction we are heading is based on the collective need and one that includes living in harmony with Mother Earth. Like a hunter would track a deer in the forest, we too need to be observant of the signs we receive from our experiences in our day to day life. I should stress that I mean the information in front of us physically – not the information we receive that is filtered through a screen. And that includes this blog. Take what you learn from screens out into the world but let it not cloud your vision of what is in front of you. I stress this because based on my observation from information we get from screens (like the picture below depicts) our leaders appear to be malevolent shepherds, no longer part of the herd. My observations have also lead me to believe it is because we the people have been sheep for so long that we don’t even realize the shepherd is making a deal with fox and he is letting the fox guard the hen house. (No pun intended and my apologies to Foxes for having to share their name with a mainstream news outlet.)

I’ll segue for a minute as this seems like a good time to ask; How many people do you know that have become ill and died this past year? What was the cause of that death? I personally know more people who have died from suicide and become ill due to loneliness and broken hearts than I do a virus allegedly from soup containing a wild bat. This is what makes up my reality because it is what I experience – not what I am programmed to believe by the fox on the screen.

So where is the silver lining, the happy ending? Far far away, perhaps. But I feel it will be closer if we take action and be the mighty oak tree we are meant to be. We change the world by achieving the calm quiet state within ourselves and follow the voice that then guides us to the light. This is one piece of the puzzle. The other is to work at squashing the voice that leaves us feeling like a small acorn on the forest floor suppressed by darkness. Seek the light in you, learn from, thank, and then squash the voice that keeps you in darkness, the world depends on it. We are all microcosms of the macrocosm and what we change in ourself has a powerful ripple effect. We change the world with every dollar we spend, every seed we plant, every piece of trash we pick up and put into the recycle. Do the thing you are meant to do, big or small, they are all powerful right now. How can you do the most good and bring the most joy to you and yours? This is what will change the world – do that. A forest can always grow back after suppression from fire, tornado, or a fierce and relentless winter; so to can a more beautiful world grow back in the place of the current broken system. We have to remember it is the light that hits the forest floor after the fire that brings new growth and life. The fire is not bad, it is a necessary part of the circle of life. Let us honour that cycle and give thanks to it this year.

We need to hear the call of the Earth, hear the voice that is calling us to walk our purpose and take action so we can manifest a better world. A world that is better not just for the next generation, but for seven generations from now. This harvest moon calls us into action. Harvest all you need to give you the strength and energy to do the things you envision in your wildest dreams, do the things you download during a walk in the forest, do the things you put on the page of our journal as you sit at the base of a tree, do the things that land in your body after a meditation in an urban green space. Do the things that allow you to harvest what God, LOVE, Creator, Highest Self, or Ecological Self, call you to do. Whatever you call that voice that guides you to the light, listen and do what it says the best you can. If you have a hard time hearing the voice, first remember that we have to stop and listen in order to hear things. Stop and get quiet first (perhaps in nature if possible) then listen with all of your being, and then trust what you get and be grateful for it. If this concept is new to you than treat it as a practice and keep at it. Small steps can have big rewards in this day in age.

A harvest moon calls us to be in a state of gratitude and acknowledging our blessings both silently to our self and verbally with others. This makes balancing time we spend with ourself and time we spend with others an important area of life to set some boundaries to ensure personal growth, as we cannot grow without having a season to let old energies die out. This is important for healthy relationships. Like the season, let what is old die off, so we can make space for the quiet time of Winter. Tis the season for observing and tracking the signs of the past year so we no where to go next. I am not talking about signs on a screen either. Get quiet and figure out what is old and needs to die off so we can make space in our garden for the more beautiful world we know is possible.

I know I am grateful and blessed to be here writing this for you today. Just writing this regardless of outcome brings me much joy and brings me purpose. I am grateful for never losing faith in my purpose and listening to the voice that told me to start a podcast. Even in the early days when I cursed having to sit on computer and edit an MP3 file and posting it to an RSS feed. Heck even when I was in the depths of my deepest despair, I still tended to my sacred garden both spiritually and physically. Spiritually through meditation and prayer, and physically through getting my hands dirty in soil, and studying many great teachers. These practices and people are what have helped me reconnect with my purpose and it is time for us who have this connection to come together and lead those through the dark times. I believe it is important for us who want to take ownership of a more beautiful world to make space and shine a light for the world to come together virtually and physically in the months and years to come. I am so grateful to share the practices and people that have inspired me in finding my purpose with you via the podcast and this blog.

Again this is why I am grateful to be harvesting some amazing things this year: a podcast that allows me to reconnect with far away members of the “pro-life tribe”, land that I steward and cares for my well being as I care for hers, and relationships and community that resists the urge to acquiesce to a form of leadership that is at the end of it’s life cycle. It is now time for us to honour this old way of life and the leaders who served us during it. It is not necessary to condemn these times in their final hours but rather be grateful for them and count the blessings humanity has acquired from the industrial and technological revolution of the past few hundred years. Without these events and technologies we couldn’t be connecting with you via my podcast and this blog. I feel it is time to celebrate the life and death of the era of separation. Perhaps holding ceremony to honour this great transition is in order, for it is largely due to the degree of humanities separation from nature and the morally unchecked rise of technology, that we are faced with relentless fear and uncertainty from the narratives of our leaders. The good news is that the stories and myths that others us from one another, the trees, the bees, the rocks, and the streams is over.

What are you grateful for? Do you see hardships as a blessing? Do you see the current political debates and disconnected leaders as an opportunity to grow towards the light and not live in fear of the dark? Do you feel like you are stepping into your unique leadership role in your tribe and want to connect with others? If so I would love to hear from you. If this blog entry resonated with you then please check out the work that inspired it. A Gathering of the Tribe written by Charles Eisenstein in 2009 was shared with me recently from a mentor. Please share this blog entry or Charles’s very well written article with a friend if you feel called to do so.

Ep. 29 Breathing In Nature and the Stoic Breath w/ Steve Beattie https://rewildmybio.com/breathing-in-nature/ https://rewildmybio.com/breathing-in-nature/#respond Fri, 25 Sep 2020 18:26:00 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=586 My guest today is the wild and wonderful Steve Beattie, spirit guide and founder of Breathing In Nature and the Stoic Breath. Steve teaches us all about his extensive breath work training and online programming. In fact he was so kind to offer listeners a 25% discount of all products and services at breathinginnature.com. See below for coupon code.

Steve guides humans on their journey within. To explore the deepest and darkest corners of their psyche and to become whole again. So I had to have him on the show to explain how we can move stuck emotion and thus root of many illnesses through our breath. We go into the history of ancient breath work practices as well as modern practices like the Wim Hof Method. Steve is also a Fascial Stretch Therapist and has been an outdoor youth mentor with Project DARE and Outward Bound. We get into the positive benefit breath work has for our mental health and Steve shares his story into healing an inflammatory condition through nothing but his breath and the will to say the words, “I am not sick”. Steve believes, as do I, that Our breath is the link between our mind and our body. Steve has studied many different breath work modalities over the years; from ancient shamanic practices of India to the more modern practices like Wim Hof. Ep. 28 Organic Food Fermentation: From Stinky Starters to Fine Wine w/ Shawn (solo) https://rewildmybio.com/organic-food-fermentation/ https://rewildmybio.com/organic-food-fermentation/#respond Fri, 25 Sep 2020 17:38:14 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=583 We are discussing the wild and wonderful world of fermented food today on the Rewild My Bio podcast. A big part of my journey into rewilding stems from my passion for fermented foods. My passion for making sauerkraut and kombucha turned into a profession in 2015 when I co-founded Booch Organic Kombucha an Ontario craft kombucha brewery in London Ontario Canada. When I started my PhD it was to research the health benefits of fermented food, however my passion fermented into nature connection and the role bacteria play for not only human health but the health of the Earth. Join me in this episode as I go through parts of a lecture I delivered at the Guelph Organic Conference and Trade Show.

Ep. 25 Updates, Adventures & Issues: Podcast update, bears and bear spray, social justice protests w/ Shawn (Solo) https://rewildmybio.com/adventures-from-the-land/ https://rewildmybio.com/adventures-from-the-land/#respond Mon, 06 Jul 2020 15:21:27 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=558 On this episode I emerge from the wilderness and back “on the grid” after a couple of wild and wonderful weeks up on the LAND. I give a podcast update in regards to some logistics with delivery of the podcast and in short will be posting every two weeks instead of weekly. This is happening as a way to focus on my Forest Therapy research and working on the LAND. I also discuss some changes to the social media channels used for the dissemination of this show and discuss some new ways the Rewild My Bio community can interact as well as stay current with adventures from the LAND. Adventures that can only happen once the battery in your vehicle goes dead and you get the chance to fully immerse in nature. Being away for most of the protests currently taking place I take the opportunity to comment on the social justice and a video I watched that resonates with me. Enjoy the episode! Please leave a rating and review and download and share past episodes.

Ep. 23 Changing Perspectives on Climate Change Adaptation w/ Dr. Brennan Vogel PhD and Dr. Richard Vuksinic ND https://rewildmybio.com/climate-change-adaptation/ https://rewildmybio.com/climate-change-adaptation/#respond Wed, 10 Jun 2020 21:29:48 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=538 My guest this week is the wild and wonderful Dr. Brennan Vogel. Brennan is a professor in the centre for environment and sustainability at Western University. His research focus is in the area of Climate Change Adaptation. In this episode we discuss a recent paper Brennan published titled, “Institutions, Indigenous Peoples, and Climate Change Adaptation in the Canadian Arctic” published in GeoJournal. It is a launching point for our discussion and opens the door to a philosophical conversation on how to proceed out of economic lockdown and into a world where voices and perspectives of marginalized people have a platform and means to make policy change through grassroots movements. Movements that end systemic oppression and environmental destruction. A timely episode recorded for World Environment Day which was June 5th, I decided to postpone the release of this episode as an act of solidarity with Black Lives Matter and to honour Blackout Tuesday. This episode was recorded before the murder of George Floyd. I believe it is timely because of the focus on how language shapes the world around us and how when it comes to climate change and living with the cycles of nature, an indigenous world view and the Inuit principles we discuss offer solutions to mitigate human made greenhouse gasses as well as adapt to climate change in a way that traditional patriarchal structures and systems have been reluctant to incorporate… well until now perhaps.

Topics Discussed:
Brennan’s interest in environmental issues; Brennan’s professional research in climate change adaptation; Philosophy of adapting to climate change as opposed to mitigating; The idea of carbon taxes; incentivizing change rather than penalizing change; Shutting down the economy to fundamentally change the resources we use to create energy; The indigenous worldview of climate change for the Inuit people; Purpose of Brennan’s recent publication; Indigenous groups are leading the way with grassroots changes for the environment across Canada; Group discussion on acknowledging privilege; The economic shut down data on environmental impact; Concluding questions.

Ep. 21 This is Not a Conspiracy Theory w/ Shawn (solo) https://rewildmybio.com/not-a-conspiracy-theory/ https://rewildmybio.com/not-a-conspiracy-theory/#respond Thu, 21 May 2020 19:31:35 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=522 My guest today is the wild and wonderful Shawn Solo… long lost brother to Han. I couldn’t resist the cheesy pun. This episode is a solo episode where I draw the line between conspiracy theory and critical social theory and how the two can be mistaken for one another. Critical theory seeks to disrupt and challenge the status quo and create change through emancipation and acknowledging a reality mediated by power relations that are socially and historically constituted. How is this relevant to the current pandemic? Biomedical dominance within healthcare, corporate news media misinformation, and world government and elitist agenda’s have together suppressed the rights and freedoms of many in face of a viral pandemic. Or so I see it. Do they have a right to lock us in our homes when the outcome could be more harmful than the viral sickness we isolated from? I like to live my life in an informed way so that I enjoy a lifestyle that makes me happy. This has lead to me valuing control over my body and natural medicine, being honest when I speak and desiring others to do the same, and democracy where elected officials are not bought and paid for by billionaires and multi-national corporations… So yeah, I have 99 problems and the handling of this lockdown is one. Buckle up and join me as I get this lockdown life off my chest. Enjoy the show!

Topics Discussed:
Intro; I’m not a conspiracy theorist; negative mental health as downside of physical distancing; I Am Not Afraid Of You.com; Nature deficit disorder and horizontal gene transfer; the economic impact on small business and health; stopping the economy for vulnerable people and repercussions for vulnerable people; critical theory vs. conspiracy theory; Censorship and Modern day book burning; The theory of 2020; system’s biology, Natural and functional medicine as opposed to the status quo biomedical model; Non-native EMF’s; Importance of Health Science literacy; Fear, nature connection, and community cohesion;

Kyle subsequently earned his B.A. in Transpersonal Psychology from Burlington College, where he focused on studying the healing potential of non-ordinary states of consciousness by exploring shamanism, Reiki, local medicinal plants and plant medicine, Holotropic Breathwork. Kyle has been studying breathwork since October 2010 with Lenny and Elizabeth Gibson of Dreamshadow Transpersonal Breathwork. Kyle earned his M.S. in clinical mental health counseling with an emphasis in somatic psychology. Kyle’s clinical background in mental health consists of working with at-risk teenagers in crisis and with individuals experiencing an early-episode of psychosis and providing counseling to undergraduate/graduate students in a university setting. Ep. 16 A Beginner’s Guide to Spring Foraging w/ Dr. Richard Vuksinic https://rewildmybio.com/beginners-guide-to-spring-foraging/ https://rewildmybio.com/beginners-guide-to-spring-foraging/#respond Thu, 16 Apr 2020 20:21:49 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=459 This week the wild and wonderful Dr. Rich and myself dive into the topic of foraging. We discuss three plants abundant in our neck of the woods and many others in early spring; dandelion, garlic mustard, and wood nettle. I am grateful for Richards knowledge on medicinal and edible wild plants and for sharing some tasty and medicinal uses in this episode. We begin with a note on ethics in wild crafting which is an important and ongoing consideration for anyone harvesting wild edibles and medicinals. If you are looking to get into foraging this episode will offer inspiration through stories as well as practical tips on harvesting and preparation of these three plants. Try Richards Garlic Mustard Pesto by combining 4 cups garlic mustard greens, 3 cups raw sun flower seeds, 3 tablespoons nutritional yeast, Olive oil (as much as you need to make it the consistency that you want), salt to taste, blend it all together in food processor. Enjoy the pesto and this episode!

Ep. 8 Mighty Mighty Mitochondria w/ Richard Vuksinic ND https://rewildmybio.com/ep-8-mighty-mighty-mitochondria-w-richard-vuksinic-nd/ https://rewildmybio.com/ep-8-mighty-mighty-mitochondria-w-richard-vuksinic-nd/#respond Mon, 02 Mar 2020 12:28:07 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=396 Today my wild and wonderful co-host Dr. Richard Vuksinic and I dive deep into cellular metabolism as it pertains to our evolutionary biology and rewilding. Why is cellular metabolism important? How is it relevant to rewilding? The story of how we evolved from a single celled organism and became able to create energy from oxygen is where we begin. It is important because the story of these ancient bacteria we call mitochondria are why we are here in this form today. Plus understanding how these ancient bacterium evolved and working with that through rewilding practices can decrease cellular dysfunction and rewrite the current cultural biography the west has with aging. When we engage in activities that are commonly considered to be part of a rewilding lifestyle we are by default building resilient mitochondria. Healthy mitochondria function has its benefits, like aging well and enhanced longevity. However building stronger mitochondria that are more resilient is a byproduct of rewilding, not necessarily the main reason one seeks to reconnect with the land and their local environment. But it is a darn good one and worth exploring in detail!  And though it is true all living things will die, by engaging in some of the rewilding practices we speak about today we can age well and live optimally well into older age. Enjoy the Show.

Topics Discussed:

Intro; Story of evolution; Richard speaks about his clinical observations with mitochondrial degradation leading to illness and disfunction; Collaboration over competition throughout evolution; Death of Patriarchy and mitochondria’s relationship to the divine feminine; Mitochondria defined and how they make energy; Endosymbiosis theory; A more holistic and functional medicine approach to mitochondrial function; How our mitochondria evolved to be resilient and how domestication could be weakening our mitochondria; biochemical individuality, geolocation and building resilience through technology and ancient nature connection practices and techniques; Detoxing and eliminating vs adding resilience through hormesis; nature connection can ameliorate mitochondrial disfunction; Cellular autophagy and the cell danger response; ‘how a rewilding lifestyle and evolutionary medicine can create mitochondrial resilience; Shawn and Richard talk about their experience aging; The end.

Ep. 7 What is Love? w/ Shawn (solo) https://rewildmybio.com/ep-7-what-is-love-w-shawn-solo/ https://rewildmybio.com/ep-7-what-is-love-w-shawn-solo/#respond Mon, 24 Feb 2020 15:53:04 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=374 Today’s guest is the wild and wonderful me… with sort of a bonus episode recorded the day after Valentines Day. Putting myself and my thoughts and beliefs out there in the most vulnerable way I have done yet on this show. This episode is about my take on what love means inspired from a recent plant medicine journey facilitated by Soltara Healing Centre. I recorded this as my contribution to the “Thank You Plant Medicine Day” initiative that was held on February 20th. 2020. Years of professional interest on the topic of Love and of course life experience and painful teachings have developed my capacity to Love and my understanding of Love. Now, my Love for self, others, and the Earth is something I am more mindful of as a gauge of how aligned with the flow of Unconditional Love (LOVE) I am throughout my day/life. I believe that after having a strong sense of the source of our Love we can know where to shine our Love flashlight in this life. From my deep nature connection work and my recent work with Ayahuasca I have a knowing that LOVE is the fabric of the Universe. I can also see we can all cultivate this LOVE in a way that will add purpose, peace, and presence to our life. I find if I want to cultivate this love I need to keep up with my daily spiritual practices and spend time connecting with the land. That said, learning from pain through the egoic realms of Love is one of the greatest teachers I have ever had, and I realize now that if we choose to acknowledge, sit with, learn and move our pain we can be more Loving of self and by doing so, we are more Loving towards each other and the natural world. Essentially our Love can heal ourselves and heal the world. Once we learn from the pain teacher and integrate that into our life we can more easily orientate ourselves to the omnipresence and flow of eternal LOVE and we free ourselves from suffering and over identifying with our pain. Enjoy the Show… Love you!

I had a blast recording this episode with my life long friends. I am very proud of their decision to quit their day jobs to pursue their wildest dream as professional musicians. These two have been playing music together for as long as I can remember so I couldn’t be more happy for them and it was a pleasure to interview them at this stage of their life adventure together. Fresh Breath is a rock-n-roll/ folk, husband and wife duo whose music is focused on spreading love and connection in the modern day. Josh said it well when he quoted Bob Marley; “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” I was lucky enough to have them play a new song “Pull” from their upcoming album. It was a touching song Katie wrote to connect with her Father who passed away years ago. Powerful podcast full of peace, love, and Fresh Breath! In this episode we talk about their recent adventure to playing in Jamaica, their across Canada summer tour, we talk about finding music during times of heartbreak and loss, how the ancient beat of a drum has an amazing ability to drop us into the present moment, flow state and performing live music, and what music has taught them each about life. Please check out this episode and stop by www.freshbreathband.com to follow along and find upcoming tour dates. This episode is dedicated to their roady and four legged friend Shibby who passed away the day this is being released after 14 wild and crazy years! Keep rockin Shib!

Emma is the founder of Spiritual Ninja Love a program that might seem ahead of its time but in actuality it is so needed in the here and now. It is no wonder why her public speaking and programming are so in demand. I see Emma’s educational message for our youth as a return to having Elders who are not abandoned and are leaders who are committed to making sure younger generations have the tools to be resilient, body, mind, and soul. Some of the tools we talk about are the 10 day silent Vipassana meditation Emma practices and the Vision Quest Emma and I participated in together. It is an amazing episode where Emma shares her lived experience and how that taught her to navigate the tough stuff. She wants us all to know, that even though our pain may shape and test us, it does not have to define us. Her greatest passion is working with youth who are often overwhelmed by emotional, social, and other life pressures. Through her alter ego – Spiritual Ninja, she is on a mission to awaken the true power inside of youth through mentorship and mindful movement programs. If you feel called to support Emma and her work with local school boards please contact her or the show. Emma is offering a discount on her programming to listeners of the show. Please contact Emma direct through her website. Emma and I thank you very much. Enjoy the show!

As you’ll find out I met Tyler at a start up sales incubator through the Propel Entrepreneurship Centre at Western University and have had the pleasure of getting to develop a friendship through our adventure to Burning Man in 2019. We have a common interest on many levels as Tyler is fellow community focused entrepreneur and explorer of consciousness. He is also an advocate for research on using psychedelics for positive mental health and is behind Forest City Psychedelics a meetup group for discussing current topics in psychedelics. Despite being so knowledgeable in the online world Tyler is conscious of staying well rooted in nature.

It is a story that reminds us that all things in nature come full circle. He and his wife Kristina run the Village Naturopathic Clinic. He is a friend that I am truly inspired by, not only from his connection and care for stewarding the land but also because he is a wealth of knowledge in all things holistic and alternative health. If you are thinking about buying land to rewild it, offer healing and workshops, or even to build your off grid or low environmental footprint home than you are going to love this episode! We hear all about Richards childhood Tom Sawyer days and his start to natural medicine. This is a special episode because it is the first of many we hope to do together and the start of some exciting upcoming projects we are working on, with a sole purpose of healing and helping the Earth and all the beings that call her home. Colin is the Co-Owner of BPM Fitness in London Ontario Canada and a long time friend and colleague of mine. Colin and I share a very holistic approach to fitness and health and I admire Colin’s connection to the natural and supernatural world. Colins philosophy is a truly wild perspective when it comes to what we are used to seeing in the fitness industry, especially during New Years resolution season. You won’t sense the same energy you’re used to experiencing in your standard gym at BPM’s new facility, and today we talk to Colin about his journey into fitness, and owning a gym that sometimes smells of palo santo and sage burning. We then discuss our goal setting practices around the Winter Solstice and New Year and Colin shares the process of surrendering to the path while keeping his vision a part of his daily practice.

We discuss Colins journey into fitness; we talk about ways to get centred and get quiet to come up with values and goals around the Winter Solstice and new year such as, journalling, ceremony, prayer, visioning, and meditation.  We also talk about the importance of community and recognizing all the goals we have accomplished. We talk about determining your beliefs and values and why you want to achieve these goals before you set them, and how to set goals from a heart centred place rather than letting the wounded ego call the shots.  We talked about not attaching yourself to the outcome of the goals that you set.

Ep. #1.2 What is Rewilding? W/ Shawn Slade https://rewildmybio.com/episode-1-2-what-is-rewilding-w-shawn-slade/ https://rewildmybio.com/episode-1-2-what-is-rewilding-w-shawn-slade/#respond Sat, 25 Jan 2020 02:06:17 +0000 https://rewildmybio.com/?p=268 What does rewilding mean? Is it even possible to Rewild? One thing for sure is that there is no one way to rewild. Join me in the second part of the first episode as I lay down more of the ground work for the show and try to explain how I see rewilding as spectrum that we are all on, in our own way, when we connect with nature. In this episode I invite you to mindfully connect with nature or “rewild” for health and becoming the best you possible.

I also discuss how this show is a self help and alternative health podcast through a rewilding lens and I also reiterate that the show is not a place for dogmatic beliefs or a part of any ‘ism’. I give my definition of rewilding that spawns from the biophilia hypothesis and can be seen as a tool to help us reconnect with the wild parts of our body and soul for health and happiness. I discuss everything from a utopia for rewilders to the use of modern day health technologies that mimic nature (you know biohacking). We are living in wild times, and Mother Earth needs us to rewild our biology, and redefine our biography… Now!

Topics discussed: Intro: reiterate points on rewilding and capitalism, paradox of rewilding; environmental rewilding definition, George Monbiot’s rewilding as a tool for Environmentalist, Shawn’s knowledge (or lack there of) on science and perspectives of climate change; Shawn presents human rewilding definition from rewild.com and wikipedia and breaks them down assumptions and questions; Shawn’s definition of rewilding spawned from biophilia hypothesis and seen as a tool for good healing, words on rewilding of the mind/soul; What is domestication? What is Wild? A rewilder’s Utopica and modern day technology; Finding our wild edge; rewilding social institutions; Rewilding as a spectrum, look at spectrum for nutrition, hydration, breathing, moving, sleeping, thinking, feeling and interacting with others; life hack or rewildinng practice? What is a modern day rewilder? Using modern health technologies that mimic nature; What is biohacking? Is Rewilding the new healthist trend? Intersection of rewilding and biohacking; My experience with biohacking; paradox of biohacking school of thought; Shawn examines a few similarities and differences between biohacking and rewilding; human body is the most amazing technology and communication tool; Shawn’s definition of wild hacking distinguishes between unnatural aspects of biohacking and biohacking culture; Shawn’s hope for returning to a wild soul and help the Earth
